Sweet Relish Hamburger Lettuce Wraps

Sweet Relish Hamburger Lettuce Wraps

It is another hamburger lettuce wrap, I know. But I love hamburgers and so do the picky eaters in my house! Sweet Relish Hamburger Lettuce Wraps satisfy my all-American flavor craving.

They also make me feel better about keeping sweet relish in the house even though it gets used once every six months. Dill relish works here, too.

The sauce is three delicious things in equal parts: ketchup, yellow mustard and mayonnaise.

Scoff if you must, but this is the easiest thing to make. It feels like the Fourth of July, even if it’s April of 2020 and nobody is allowed to go any farther than their own back yard. I served it with some ridiculously easy roasted potatoes. God bless America.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. ground beef, 80% lean works best
  • 1/4 yellow onion, finely minced
  • 1/4 c sweet pickle relish
  • 1/2 t kosher salt
  • 1/4 t pepper
  • 1 head butter lettuce
  • ketchup
  • yellow mustard
  • mayonnaise
Directions
  • Step 1 Heat grill to 350 degrees F.
  • Step 2 Combine the beef, onion, relish, salt and pepper by hand in a bowl and mix well.
  • Step 3 Form four patties and leave at room temperature for 15 minutes before grilling.
  • Step 4 Grill the burger patties starting over open flame on the middle two burners of the grill with all four burners on.
  • Step 5 After a minute, turn off the middle two burners to prevent the fat from the burgers flaming too much.
  • Step 6 Cook for about 5 minutes on the first side, then turn the middle burners on again and flip.
  • Step 7 Repeat the same process and after one minute, turn the two middle burners off again. Cook until done, about 4 more minutes.
  • Step 8 As burgers cook, wash the lettuce leaves and pat dry.
  • Step 9 Combine the ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise in equal parts. 2 or 3 T of each is plenty.
  • Step 10 Serve each burger over 5 or 6 lettuce leaves with sauce on the side or on the top. The eater can construct a ‘bun’ out of the lettuce leaves.
