TL/DR – Sweet Potatoes and Broccoli with Garlic Sage Butter. Roasted sweet potatoes with either roasted or steamed broccoli, tossed in an easy garlic sage butter and topped with optional Parmesan cheese. A colorful and easy side dish. –
We’re nearing the end of August and the sage in my garden continues to grow really fast. It’s got thick, woody stems now and is shooting off all sorts of new growth. It’s hard to keep up with.
Garlic and sage are one of the best combinations of all time, especially when butter is involved. This recipe uses roasted sweet potatoes tossed in a bit of olive oil with salt and pepper and steamed broccoli. (Yes, you could roast the broccoli, too. Just do so on a separate side of the sheet pan so that if the broccoli is finished first it can be removed.)
Cook finely minced sage in butter and grate on some garlic using a microplane grater towards the end. Toss everything together. Option: top with grated Parmesan cheese… yes, please!

Sweet Potatoes and Broccoli with Garlic Sage Butter
An easy and colorful side dish with fresh sage, garlic, and butter.
Ingredients
- 1 medium to large sweet potato, diced into 1 inch cubes
- 2 T extra virgin olive oil
- 3/4 t kosher salt
- 1/4 t ground black pepper
- 1 head broccoli, cut into small florets
- 3 T fresh sage, minced
- 2 T butter
- 1 clove garlic, grated on a microplane
- 1/4 c grated Parmesan cheese, optional
- kosher salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
- Step 1 Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
- Step 2 Place the diced sweet potatoes on a sheet pan and toss with the olive oil, salt and pepper. Spread the cubes out evenly on the pan. Roast at 425 for 22 – 27 minutes.
- Step 3 While the sweet potatoes roast, steam the broccoli until crisp tender, about 7 minutes.
- Step 4 After starting the broccoli to steam, melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat and add the sage and allow to cook for about 4 minutes. Grate on the garlic using a microplane, stir and continue to cook for another 2 minutes, being careful not to burn the garlic. Remove from the heat and set aside.
- Step 5 Once the sweet potatoes and broccoli are both done, toss them in a medium bowl with the Garlic butter and season to taste. Serve immediately. Optionally, top with grated Parmesan cheese.
